Washing your hair is a personal thing and the time of day you choose to soak your trestles will depend on lots of different factors. Some people prefer to do it in the morning, others like to wash their hair at the end of the day.
But did you know that you can enjoy different benefits for washing your hair depending on the time of day? There is no real right or wrong answer here as it depends on the individual, but read on to see how the time of day can affect how you wash your hair.
Morning hair washing
One major advantage of washing your hair in the morning is that you do not have to worry about trapped moisture. This can be a concern for night-time washers, especially if your hair is too wet before going to bed, as it could lead to dandruff or even a scalp infection. When there is too much trapped moisture it can encourage the growth of microbes, which leads to irritation and the formation of flakes.
However, a downside to washing your hair in the morning is that there is less time for it to dry naturally, especially if you need to leave the house early for work or for any other appointment. You’ll have to use artificial heat on your hair to dry it, which isn’t always the best for coloured hair (blow dry on a low-to-medium heat if possible).
Anyone with fine and/or oily hair may also benefit from washing their hair in the morning and should apply shampoo at the roots and let it lather through the ends.
Thick and curly hair is best washed at night, ensuring it is mostly dried before bed. You can also style before bedtime, which will allow it to settle as you sleep, or simply dry style in the morning.
Night-time hair washing
If you are worried about waking up with crazy hair the morning after washing it, you can softly blow dry on a low heat before you get into bed, so there is just a hint of moisture left in.
Avoid putting your hair into a ponytail when wet before bed. Hair swells when it is drying and tying it up could lead to additional breakage.
Washing your hair at night before you go to bed will mean you will need to touch it up in the morning, but it shouldn’t take long to get the style ready. It all comes down to how much time you have on your hands in the morning- -whether you go style from scratch or just do minimal adjustments before going about your day.
Your way is the right way
At the end of the day, it all comes down to your preferences and these are only suggestions about the best time to wash your hair. What works for one person may not work for another, which is what makes our hair so unique and wonderful.
