When is the best time to cut your hair short?

If you’ve had the same hairstyle for a while, you may start to feel you are stuck in a rut. There’s nothing worse than feeling fed up with your hairstyle, as it’s not something you can just pull off your head and replace.

Making a change is a big commitment, especially if you are thinking of going short. So, when is the best time to trim things down? We talk about what you should consider when it comes to planning a style change.

Should you cut your hair short at a certain age?

There is something of a stereotype that women cut their hair as they get older. However, women in their 40s and 50s that do trim their hair do so mostly because of concerns about damage caused by hair colouring or simply because they want a lower maintenance style.

While, of course, age can influence some women to cut their hair, especially if their hair is thinner or coarser, most simply trim it down due to preference. Age is rarely the main factor for cutting hair short, as there are often other things behind the decision.

Can the right hairstyle make you look younger?

The right hairstyle can definitely make you look younger. As we explain below, there are a few different things to consider when looking at new hairstyles, as you need to make sure it complements your face and personality.

Some ideas that could work include:

  • Layered cuts: This adds movement and volume to your hair, helping it to look fuller and more youthful.
  • Bobs and lobs (long bogs): The beauty of this style is that it helps to create the illusion of a stronger jawline and more sculpted face shape. Long bobs are more classic in style, adding thickness and weight so it looks fuller.
  • Face-framing bangs: Grown-out bangs or curtain bangs help to soften facial features, drawing attention away from wrinkles and lines, such as those that might develop on the forehead.

How do you choose a style that truly suits you?

If you’re stuck on finding a new style that you think will suit you, here are a few pointers that could help:

1. Look for inspiration: Do any friends, family or colleagues have a style you like? Look at social media, magazines and celebrities for styles you admire.

2. Consider your lifestyle: You’ll want a style that works with your regular routine. While you want it to be stylish it should also be practical. Think about lengths, cuts and silhouettes and maybe even experiment a little with some colour.

3. Factor in face shape: This will affect the framing and balance of your new style. For example, rounder faces are elongated when more height is added. The right style can also highlight favourite features like cheekbones and also help to downplay some you dislike.

4. Complement your style: How would your proposed new style fit in with your clothes and accessories? Or maybe you are planning a complete makeover from head to toe?
