What is the best natural oil to use for hair?

From coconut to avocado oil, natural oils that have been extracted from seeds, fruits and nuts can be very beneficial for your hair.

It’s a practice that goes way back to ancient folk treatments, with native peoples using the oils to treat a wide variety of health conditions. The oils can help to enhance texture, strengthen hair and boost shine, offering support for all varieties of hair.

Here’s a look at the best natural oils you can use along with some tips on how to get the most out of them.

The best natural oils for hair

Some of the best natural oils for hair include:

1. Moisturise and repair hair with coconut oil

Coconut oil is packed with lauric acid (a saturated fat) that is believed to play a key role in repairing damaged hair.

Research has found that using coconut oil on your hair could lower protein loss (this is the main component of your hair, which can be damaged by exposure to too many chemicals).

You can apply coconut oil directly to your hair without dilution and the fragrance is also very easy to enjoy.

2. Boost softness and shine with jojoba oil

If you want to add more shine to your hair, using jojoba oil is a great place to start. Although the oil is a wax ester (a mixture of essential fatty acids) it can add a beautiful shine to your hair. You’ll often find jojoba oil included in the list of ingredients in many popular shampoos and conditioners for this reason.

The oil is also known for helping to soften and restore lustre to dull looking hair. And if you suffer from a dry scalp, jojoba oil can help to keep it moisturised to combat dandruff symptoms.

3. Prevent hair breakage with avocado oil

Avocado as a food has undergone a renaissance in recent years and in oil form it can offer just as many benefits for your hair. It is a great source of vitamin E, which delivers an important antioxidant that can prove useful in reducing hair loss.

Scientists believe that vitamin E can lower the amount of free radicals and oxidative stress that damage the hair follicles in a person’s scalp.

4. Control frizz and split ends with grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil offers a light option, which makes it a suitable choice for people with fine hair. It’s an oil stacked with antioxidant properties and can also be very useful when it comes to easing frizz and for treating split ends.

Anyone with very fine hair using grapeseed oil should avoid applying it to the roots as this will help to prevent a greasy buildup.

5. Improve hair management with argan oil

Argan oil is extracted via steam distillation from the kernels of a native Moroccan tree. In recent years, a growing number of people have started to use the oil as a natural treatment for coarse, frizzy and brittle hair types.

The oil is known for its conditioning effects, whilst also being packed with a host of essential fatty acids that can make it easier to manage your hair long-term.

How to apply organic oil to your hair

There are a few different ways you can apply natural oil to your hair:

  • Add a few drops directly to your favourite shampoo or conditioner.
  • Add several drops of your chosen oil to the ends of damp hair before styling/blow-drying.
  • Lightly heat 1-2 teaspoons of oil, before carefully massaging directly into your dry hair. Let it rest for 30 minutes before washing it out with cold water.

Leave-in treatments are usually better suited to people with dry/damaged or thick hair. A pre-shampoo treatment could be more beneficial for anyone with fine hair.
