Is Vegan Hair Dye Better For Your Hair?

A growing number of people are curious about the possible benefits of using vegan hair dye and if it is better than traditional dyes.

As we become more conscious about the ingredients in the products we use and the damage some of them cause to the environment, it’s also worth thinking about how we can make the switch to sustainable alternatives.

This week we examine the differences between vegan hair dye and traditional hair dye and some of the ways it could help your hair care regime.

What is vegan hair dye?

Vegan hair dye is hair dye that includes natural compounds for its colouring, rather than using any products or by-products derived from animals.

This means that all the ingredients should only come from plants (you may also see products that are labelled as ‘plant-based dyes’).

Are all vegan dyes plant-based?

It is important to be aware that not all plant-based dyes will be strictly vegan. On the surface it sounds a little confusing, but this is because some products (a small percentage) use synthesised non-animal based compounds as part of their formula.

There is also a distinction to be made between a product labelled as ‘cruelty-free’ and one that is labelled as ‘vegan’, even though they also go hand-in-hand.

A cruelty-free product is one that has not been developed with animal testing. On the other hand, when a product is vegan, it is because no animal products have been used.

So, it is crucial that you look for a hair dye that is both vegan and cruelty-free to ensure that no animals have been exploited to make the product.

What are the benefits of using vegan hair dye?

If you are thinking of making the switch, vegan hair dye can offer benefits such as:

1. Containing natural ingredients

The plant-based ingredients used in vegan hair dyes, such as henna, are far more sustainable than animal-based alternatives. They can also provide a host of natural nutrients for your hair and skin that can improve its overall quality.

2. Ensuring no animals are harmed

If you’re an animal lover (or even if you’re not) there’s no reason for them to suffer for our vanity.

Vegan hair dyes do not include animal by-products, and their manufacturing does not require any animal testing, so using the product ensures no animals are harmed at any stage.

3. Kinder to your hair

Similarly, vegan hair dyes do not contain harmful chemicals that can damage your hair or skin.

Their production and disposal can also be damaging for the environment, so by not investing in them you can not only help your hair but also do a little bit more for the planet.
