Is Organic Hair Dye Better For Your Hair?

Applying organic hair dye to your hair.

Thousands of people use dye to colour their hair, whether it’s to cover greys, highlight natural colour or to create an entirely new look. The option of using organic hair dye is now more accesible than ever, with a growing number of brands on the market giving you a natural alternative.

Whilst hair dye has become a part of everyday life, some people remain concerned about exposing their strands to harsh chemicals on a long-term basis. So, the question remains, is organic hair dye better than conventional hair dye? We take a close look to find out more.

What is organic hair dye?

Organic hair dye is hair colour that uses less chemical and more organic botanicals (that are not grown using pesticides). These types of products should not contain ammonia, paraphenylenediamine (PPDs), harsh chemicals or parabens, which makes them more suitable for people with sensitive skin or anyone concerned about the effects of using artificial compounds in their hair.

What’s the difference between conventional and organic hair dyes?

The main difference between conventional and organic hair dyes is that you will find there is usually no ammonia and fewer chemicals in organic hair dyes.

Ammonia is a key ingredient in traditional hair dye formulas, working as the main component that enters the hair cuticle so colour can be left there.

However, with repeated use, this can cause some damage to certain types of hair, which is why people with sensitive strands may find it better to use organic hair dye.

Does this mean ammonia dyes are bad for your hair?

Ammonia-based dyes could damage hair over time, especially if used incorrectly. That’s why it is important to always read the instructions in full before dying your hair at home and if you are still unsure, you could always consult with your hairdresser.

Conventional hair dyes will not damage your health and are perfectly safe to use. After dying your hair with any chemical treatment, you should then use a PH-balanced shampoo and conditioner to allow your hair to return to a stable, restored condition.

Is organic hair dye 100% natural?

Although the language used on some organic products indicates that it is 100% natural, this is not usually the case.

Whilst they can be better for your hair than conventional hair dyes, they will still contain some chemicals. However, they will also contain a healthy amount of botanical and naturally derived ingredients that are good for your hair.

Henna is the only hair dye that can be called 100% natural, although there are still some drawbacks to using it as a hair dye. This is because henna products tend to contain metallic salts, which can be quite harsh on hair.

Is organic hair dye better for your hair?

It’s difficult to say with certainty that organic hair dye is better for any one individual’s hair. In most cases it comes down to your hair type and what you want to achieve with your tresses.

Organic hair dye can certainly be kinder to your hair, as your hair cuticles are not exposed to as many harsh chemicals. This can mean you experience less skin and scalp irritation, which can come as a result of using ammonia-based dyes.
