How to Talk About Menopause at Home

Many of us know that talking and sharing a problem is good for the soul, but it’s not always easy to reach out – especially when it comes to deeply personal subjects.

Whether you’re in or out of a relationship, live alone or have children, there are people in your lives that want to know you are okay. Here we discuss how to talk about menopause at home, giving you some tips for you to start much needed conversations that can change your life for the better.

1. Take the honest approach

Many women struggling with menopause symptoms can see it as a personal failing and choose not to reveal or admit to their feelings. But speaking about your experience can not only be good for you as you helps to release some of the burden, but you may find that others feel the same too.

Sharing your thoughts can also change perceptions at home. Your family will probably have noticed some differences in recent moments but may not have known how to address it. Talking things through can help them to understand what you have been dealing with and how to offer more support going forward.

2. Learn more about your body’s transition

As the old saying goes, knowledge is power and that can also be applied to menopause. By learning more about the changes occurring in your body, why it is making you feel a certain way and things you can do to improve your health, you can create coping mechanisms.

It’s also a good idea to share your knowledge with your partner or children. You can teach them about what menopause is, the symptoms women experience and how it can affect them. This empowers them to think about how they can offer support to help you.

3. Ask for help if you need it

There’s no need to suffer in silence with menopause. It is a natural transition for your body to make and you deserve extra support and help if you need it. After all, if you are ill or in need support in other areas of your life, you would seek out help, so it’s no different with menopause.

Remind yourself that menopause transition is natural and part of the ageing process and there is no reason to be ashamed. The sooner you ask for help, the sooner you’ll start to feel like your old self again.

4. Talking can break down barriers

Taboos can only be broken when we start to speak about certain topics. Menopause has remained a taboo discussion for far too long, so it is important to discuss the issues it creates, as it can help to break down outdated preconceptions about it.

It can also empower your children and other young people you come into contact with, so they do not have to undergo the same experiences. The important thing to remember is to discuss the topic only when you are comfortable and to do it on your terms, as after all, it is your body you are talking about.

5. Reduce pressure in the bedroom

Many women experience a loss in libido during menopause, with others also go through similar during perimenopause. It can be caused by many things, including a fall in oestrogen and testosterone, for some women.

Aside from not feeling in the mood for sex, there are other physical symptoms of menopause to deal with, such as night sweats, weight gain and tiredness, which all have an affect on your body and mood.

The important thing is to speak honestly with your partner as it is not something you can fix on your own. See how you can rev things up to reignite intimacy levels and don’t be scared to try new things if you feel they can help.
