Choosing the right hair styling tool for your hair type can make all the difference to its appearance and long-term health. But knowing where to start isn’t always easy, especially if you have struggled in the past to find one that works for you.
Here we look at the basic heat styling tools that are available for you to choose, as well as some helpful tips on how to protect your hair when using them.

Straight, flat hair
Whilst there is plenty of upside to having straight hair, there are times when it can look flat and uninspiring. This can make it difficult to add curl or volume, or just to get your hair to hold a style.88
Hot air brush stylers, curlers and straighteners hold the key to styling straight, flat hair. Their versatility can work wonders for your hair to help you create voluminous hairstyles without any hassle.
You can combine the benefits of a hairdryer and brush in a single tool with a hot air brush styler. Look for a product that has at least two temperature settings, so you are not overexposing your hair to excessive heat. If you start to feel damage in your hair, add a heat protectant to wet hair before you start styling.
Wavy, frizzy hair
Lots of people struggle to tame and style wavy, frizzy hair. The end result can look fantastic, but getting there is not always easy.
The good news is you have a few options available to you, such as curling wands, straighteners, straightening brushes and good quality hair dryers.
Hair dryers that offer ionic technology help to break down water molecules and reduce frizz. Attach a diffuser attachment to dry your waves, which can minimise frizz and disruption whilst enhancing their natural shape.
Ceramic or tourmaline straighteners allow you to evenly distribute heat to reduce damage. After sectioning your hair, simply move the straightener from the roots to the ends to create the sleek look you really want.
For a more defined curl, curling wands can help to enhance naturally wavy hair. Look for a product that has different barrel sizes so you can try out different curl types.
Curly, unmanageable hair
Curly hair can present even more of a challenge when it comes to keeping it under control. Thankfully, there are some easy solutions you can try.
The classic curler is a good place to start. Choose a curling wand that has a barrel size appropriate for your desired curly type. Opt for a smaller barrel for tighter curls, or a larger barrel if you prefer looser waves or curls.
When using a diffuser attachment it can ensure airflow is distributed evenly, which will preserve the natural texture of your curls and reduce frizz. When styling, turn your hair upside down and place your curls into the diffuser, as this will enhance your natural curls by allowing the warm air to circulate.

How to avoid damage when heat styling
Heat-styling tools are a must-have for many people – although it is important to prevent overexposure, as you can experience dry and dull strands, split ends and hair breakage:
1. Invest in high quality styling tools
Of course, there’s no need to break the bank, but it also rarely makes sense to make your choice based on price alone. Whilst it may cost a little more, your hair will thank you for it in the long run.
2. Switch to the right temperature setting
Tools with temperature control should be a priority. Try to avoid using the highest setting as this will simply fast track damage. 200-300°F is fine for normal hair and below 200°F for fine hair.
3. Apply a heat protectant
Always use a heat protectant to protect the quality of your hair and help maintain your styling. It creates a shield to prevent the tool from scorching your hair, minimising frizz, breakage and follicle damage.
4. Use a weekly hair mask
If you have heat-damaged hair, try using a hair mask to condition and nourish your hair back to health. Try this once a week by replacing your conditioner with a natural hair mask and let it soak in for a few minutes before washing out.
5. Try a no-heat hairstyle
Another option could be to try a no-heat hairstyle, whether it’s an easy updo or braids. This reduces heat exposure on your hair follicles and scalp and you can also use a leave-in serum or oil to tame frizz and add a glossy finish.
