With World Oceans Day just around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to spotlight its importance.
The ocean is often out of sight and out of mind, with its beauty and the role it plays in our daily lives rarely given a second thought.
At Kartee we try to implement eco-friendly initiatives wherever possible, including water-saving schemes – and here we explain more about World Oceans Day and why it is worth getting involved with.

What is World Oceans Day?
World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8th. It was inaugurated in 2002 with the purpose of honouring the importance of the ocean and highlighting our need to protect it.
After all, the ocean covers more than 70% of the planet, hosts 80% of the world’s biodiversity and produces at least 50% of Earth’s oxygen – so its health plays a pivotal role in our own survival.
What are some of the main threats to the ocean?
The biodiversity of the oceans is under threat from things like:
- Global warming that is causing rising sea levels and coastal populations.
- Increased discharge of sewage and other forms of toxic runoff.
- Almost one-third of the toxic contaminants and nutrients that enter coastal areas is caused by air pollution.
- Around 31% of fish stocks are either fished to capacity or overfished.
- Approximately 80% of the world’s coral reefs have been affected by bleaching. Once they die, they rarely come back, and this has a huge impact on the ocean ecosystem.
How can you celebrate World Oceans Day?
You don’t have to be a marine specialist to take part in celebrating World Oceans Day. Here are a few simple suggestions you can try.
Reduce plastic pollution
You may already know plastic pollution poses one of the greatest threats to our oceans. The good news is that you can help by reducing plastic consumption and swapping to reusable bottles, bags, coffee cups and the like. You can even get involved in local initiatives like beach cleaning or taking part in charity projects and schemes.
Learn more about fish
Whilst it is impossible to know exactly how many fish there are in the ocean, scientists estimate there may be around 3.5 billion. There could be anywhere between 25,000 to 35,000 species of fish – so there is no shortage to learn about! Each species is fascinating and interesting in their own right and there is a vast amount of information online that can help you discover more.
Switch to sustainable seafood
If you are not vegan or vegetarian, there are still ways you can help the ocean. Cod, haddock, salmon, tuna and prawns account for 80% of the seafood we eat in the UK. Look out for the Marine Stewardship Council ‘blue tick’ on food labels, whilst also keep an eye out for Organic, Global Aquaculture Alliance, Best Aquaculture Practices (GAA BAP) and BAP labels.
