Sometimes it can be difficult to determine how often to wash your hair, especially when there is so much conflicting information about the subject.
Where some people can leave long gaps between washes, others find that cleaning their hair more regularly is better for their locks.
So, how often should you wash your hair? We offer some helpful tips on what to look out for so you can find a haircare routine that allows your tresses to flourish.
Is it okay to not wash my hair?
Some people choose not to wash their hair too frequently as they believe it can make it healthier. They claim that over time, less sebum (scalp oil) is produced, which can help to produce shiny, moist hair that is not overly greasy.
However, everyone’s hair is different and what works for one person may not be suitable for someone else. Choosing to go for extended periods without washing your hair depends on how much product you use, how much dirt it is exposed to and how much oil your scalp produces.
Can I wash my hair every day?
Most haircare experts agree that it is not a good idea to wash your hair every day. Whilst it may seem like the cleanest and healthiest thing to do, washing it too often can create more damage than good.
Over-washing your hair can remove too much oil from your scalp, which can dry it out and make the strands weaker, leading to more split ends and breakage.
Should I wash my hair once a week?
Washing your hair once a week depends on your hair type. For many people, washing your hair once a week is perfectly fine, as long as you are using a good quality shampoo and your hair accepts this sort of regime.
People who have very dry hair may find that they need to wash more frequently, as it can start to lose its natural moisture with age.
How often should I wash my hair?
In general, it is thought that washing your hair every 2-3 days should help to keep it in good condition, although this does depend on your hair type.
People with fine hair are more likely to develop greasy hair more quickly, which means they should wash their hair more often.
Anyone with curly, thicker or afro hair tends to have drier hair and can often make do with washing only once a week without creating any negative side effects.
If you have oily hair that seems to get greasy very quickly, then leaving it an extra day or two between washes can help it to flourish.
