Public discourse about grey hair has slowly begin to change in recent years, and where it was once stigmatised, it is very much now the norm for women to embrace their natural hair colour.
While the celebrities make it look easy, looking after your own grey hair may still be challenging for some. We’ve put together some helpful tips to help you get more from your grey hair.

1. Treat yourself to a great haircut
Haircuts have an important role to play in keeping grey hair healthy – and when worn well, natural white hair can look very sophisticated.
Whether you have it short or long, curly or straight, it’s all about the style and the way you wear it. Talk to your stylist to find a hairstyle that not only looks great but also compliments your features and hair texture.
2. Keep your grey hair moisturised
It’s important to maintain moisture levels in grey hair as it tends to be wirer and drier, so you need extra help to keep it soft and smooth.
Look for haircare products that provide added hydration without flattening the hair or leaving it looking heavy. Also avoid products that clog up pores, especially if you have acne-prone skin, as it can cause more breakouts.
Look for ingredients like:
- Plant-derived squalane which can help to seal in moisture, enhance shine and boost heat protection.
- Hemisqualane (also called C13-15 alkane) is another plant-derived ingredient that offer protection against heat damage whilst also reducing frizz.
3. Manage your grey flyaways
Going grey can also mean you have more flyaways to contend with. Straight and wavy hair can see an increase in breakage, whilst curly tends to thin and tighten up. This causes the grey to stand out from the usual texture of your hair, which creates more frizz.
You can use a serum that contains a natural emollient like Ethylhexyl olivate, which is kind to skin and helps to tame flyways. Many can be used before or after styling, depending on your preference.

4. Try a toning shampoo
If you can take care of the tone, condition and vibrancy of your hair, it will help to brighten it up.
To remove any unwanted yellow, dull or brassy tones, try a violet toning product to keep them neutralised. Toning shampoos that have lots of nourishing ingredients help to create a healthy shine, whilst also adding vibrancy, which can make a world of difference to your hair.
5. Protect your grey hair from the sun
Hair that has less pigment can also mean you have a thinner protective layer (also known as the cuticle) which can make your hair more open to UV damage.
Try to use products that can protect your hair against heat-styling tools and natural aggressors like pollution and UV rays, which can prevent damage, along with brassiness and yellowing.
Hats are a simple solution, whilst products that have a sun-exposure absorber or natural ingredients like moringa oleifera (horseradish tree) extract can help to protect your hair from the sun.
