Most of us relish the summer and love the sun – just not what it can do to our hair. If it’s not drying it out and making it frizzy, it’s changing hair colour or causing scalp damage.
Heat and humidity are the worst culprits, but there are some hair care tips you can use to keep your hair in good condition this summer.

1.Reduce Exposure to Added Heat
Try to minimise use of your hairdryer, curling iron or flat iron this summer, as your hair will already be blasted with intense heat during the day. The idea is to avoid placing extra stress onto your hair and scalp, so it isn’t overwhelmed with heat damage. Try washing your hair at night and sleeping on it, which allows your hair to dry naturally overnight, and you can style it when you wake up.
2. Use Cooler Water
If you’re a fan of very hot showers, try to turn down the temperature during the summer as it can help to revitalise your skin and scalp. At the same time, it is also beneficial for the environment, as you are losing less energy and emitting fewer amounts of CO2. Water is one of the world’s most important resources, and doing your bit can help your hair and the planet.
3. Keep Your Hair Dehydration Free
The higher levels of humidity mean certain hair types are more prone to frizz and damage during the summer. Using a softening shampoo can help with combatting frizz, followed by a hair mask. Leave it on your hair for 10-15 minutes max to let the nutrients soak into your hair, before washing it out with warm water.

4. Take It Easy With Hair Dye
You’ll want to look great for the summer and may be tempted to dye your hair to get that beach-ready look. However, coloured hair is more likely to be damaged by the sun, so you may want to change up your routine for the summer. So, instead of a full bleach, why not go for gentle highlights instead? If you’re worried about your roots growing out, switching to stylish hats could offer a solution.
5. Style With Heat In Mind
There are few things worse than a sweaty, clammy neck during the summer, especially when your hair sticks to your skin. Try raising your hair to increase the airflow and cool yourself down – of course, not everyone is a fan of ponytails, so you could opt for a looser style that won’t fall flat on your back. Also, switch to combs in the summer, as drier hair is more fragile and rough brushing can cause more damage.
